Situated in the centre of Pompeii, half way between the ruins and the Sanctuary, this pastry shop has been offering its delicious products for over 60 years. It was 1955 when Luigi De Vivo acquired a small bar in Via Roma, a stone’s throw from the famous Sanctuary. These were the post war years, but Luigi looked to the future with confidence. The success continued with his two young sons who entered the business and continue to prepare high quality cakes using the finest products and ingredients. De Vivo boasts an excellent pastry shop, ice cream parlor and coffee bar with a superb catering service. The premises have been recently restored for its 60th anniversary and this allows the bakery to welcome customers in a refined and elegant environment where it’s possible to taste the typical cakes and pastries of the Neapolitan tradition, thanks to the art of their young master pastry chefs. “LA BETTOLA DEL GUSTO”, WINERY- RESTAURANT Elegantly laid tables, accompanied by soft lighting, surrounded by boards filled with labels of wines representative of the high Italian enology. Divided into two rooms, this winery- restaurant in Pompeii has about 50 seats and organizes small banquets, tastings and live jazz evenings. They work a lot with fresh fish, but also offer meat dishes. In addition, they take care to the needs of celiacs and vegetarians. Vincenzo and Bartolomeo Fortunato, twins of 25 years, built this restaurant with their partner Salvatore Filosa. The owner Vincenzo offers typical Mediterranean dishes, accompanied by an elegant and comfortable atmosphere. An ideal menu recommends broccoli strudel on sausage sauce and octopus with black rice or seafood ravioli with provolone del Monaco and scampi sauce of pumpkin plus baba with Annurca apple and Neapolitan pastiera. “ESPOSITO MASTROFORNAIO”, BAKERY This bakery was founded in 1960 by Luigi Esposito and Severina De Gruttola. Since 2001 Nicola and Carmelo continue the work undertaken by their parents diversifying the company's business. The most important product of this bakery is called “Panis Pompeii” and was born after Carmelo - the talented master baker – watched a BBC documentary about the loaves of ancient Pompeii (well 9 types of bread, including 'the bread of the rich period' who inspired Carmelo to create Panis Pompei). So, Panis Pompeii tries to recreate a typical Roman bread and it is made with spelled flour, milk noble, fresh butter, fresh eggs, honey, Sorrento walnuts, almonds, dried figs, raisins of the hills around Vesuvius, candied fruit of Sorrento, anise and cinnamon. So next time you're in Pompeii take a few steps off the beaten path and join the locals at these favorite hot-spots!
